외교저널 (Diplomacy Journal) 이준석 기자 | 해양경찰청은 “지난 18일부터 22일까지 5일간 캐나다 밴쿠버에서 열린 제23차 북태평양 해양치안 기관장 회의에 참석했다.”고 22일 밝혔다. 전 세계 코로나 등의 영향으로 2019년 러시아 개최를 마지막으로 그동안 만나지 못했던 한국, 미국, 일본, 캐나다 4개국이 첫 대면 회의를 통해 만나게 된 것으로 그 어느 해보다 뜻깊고 의미가 깊었다. 이번 회의에서는 러시아와 중국이 불참함에 따라 4개국으로 진행됐으며, 북태평양에서의 위기대응, 해상보안, 합동작전, 불법어로, 밀수·밀입국 등 6개 실무그룹이 열띤 발표·토의를 통해 전 세계 새로운 해양위기 상황에서의 더 한 층 강화된 협력방안에 대해 심도 있는 논의가 이루어졌다. 아울러 4개국 기관장이 참석한 이번 회의 총회에서는 6개 실무그룹, 4개 기관장 총 50여명의 토의 결과를 바탕으로 북태평양에서의 해양안전 확보 방안에 대한 ‘회의성과’를 공유할 예정이다. 김종욱 해양경찰청장은 “매년 빠르게 변화하는 해양환경을 둘러싸고 새로운 위기상황에 대한 상호 협력의 중요성을 확인하는 자리였다”며 “이번 회의를 통해 북태평양 해역에서 우리 국민들의 소중한 생명
